Goodbye Golden Oak!

I've been working a little more on our kitchen. This past weekend sanded some more golden oak cabinet doors, primed, painted, glazed, and sealed. I have a few more of the upper cabinets to do and then will start on the bottom cabinets. Oh how I wish this project was FINISHED!

BEFORE

After it is sanded, primed, and painted

Next, it's time to glaze
Some people like alot of glaze and put it all over the cabinets...I just wanted the glazing to be subtle, so I just applied it where I wanted it.

Then the long, tedious process starts of wiping the excess glaze off.

My sister in law who also painted & glazed her golden oak cabinets said the glazing was her easiest step. She wanted a heavier glazed look than I do, so I spend alot of time removing glaze being careful to not remove it all. The tools I use for this are paper towels, sponge brush, water, and a tiny paint brush.

After

It's very subtle like I said, but I like it! Now, gotta go work on some more cabinet doors. Hubby installed crown molding this weekend...I'll show you it tomorrow.

I am so happy to see that golden oak leave! Our house was full of golden oak and little by little it is going bye bye! I hope it never goes back in style!! I'll rebel if it does!

I have been wanting to do that to my cabinets since we bought our house but I haven't talked hubby into it yet. They look great!

WOW ! Terrific difference. I did the same thing in our kitchen in our previous home. Not a fan of the golden oak either. Can't wait to see it finished!

Beautiful, Darlene!

We had golden oak at the farm. The only cabinet I redid was a bathroom vanity, using the colors you used. Made all the difference in the world! I wish we had gone ahead and done the rest of the cabinets. Never got around to it though.

I can't wait to see your kitchen, when finished. Great job!

Oh my! You are doing a spectacular job of painting those oak cupboards. We have almost identical oak in our kitchen; I loathe it, but haven't had the courage to break out the paint. Are you using oil paint? And does the heavy oak graining show through? What kind of glazing are you using? It all looks gorgeous. Oh ... I think I need to do this! -- Cass

Oh Darlene, how fantastic the doors look. I would so love to paint my cabinets, but just haven't committed to it yet, because of the amount of work involved. I can't wait to see your finished product.

Just fabulous!

That looks like so much work, but you sure are doing a great job. It's going to look gorgeous. Can't wait to see more pics. Isn't it funny how our taste changes? I used to love oak. Our last house was full of it....I had to move to get something different! LOL!

Nice to meet you. I found you at Susan's.

Love them. I have the same ugly oak cabinets in my kitchen. I have been wanting to paint them white. I love the glaze on them. I will have to remember to do that as well.

Can't wait to see the finished project. But for now, the cabinets are pretty fab.

Those are looking FABULOUS!!!! I want to do ours but I haven't decided I am ready to commit yet! I know it is a LOT of work. It is going to look spectacular.♥

I love the glazed look. I have white cabinets like that and would like to perk them up just a bit. I always thought I would have to do the "dry brush" technique to just get some color on the raised portions of the doors. Thanks for you example pics....that makes it so much more understandable.

Darlene, these cabinets look GREAT! I did this to our kitchen cabinets in our last home and it really, really improved the look of our kitchen.

I keep thinking I should do the same to our oak cabinets at our little cottage up north. . . but then too much work at the cottage cancels out the reason we built our cottage ~ to REST!!! :)

Blessings,

Sher

Oh I don't blame you one bit for changing the Oak. I would do the same. It makes for a brighter atmosphere doesn't it?
Your girls are beautiful.

You are doing a wonderful job and your cabinets are going to be beautiful. My husband designs kitchens - thus we have seen the glazes that enhance cabinetry. Everyone wants this look right now! What an inspiration you are - to transform your kitchen yourself!
Great post.

They are looking so great! I think the amount of glaze you're using looks perfect. I feel your pain of doing this~we were painting ours about this time last year~it's all worth it though. I love all of the shutters you just posted as well~putting some in my "inspiration folder." Have a great day~
