Metamorphosis Of My Garage Sale Find

In my previous post today I showed you what treasures I found this weekend while garage sale-ing.

Well now, it's time to show you how I transformed one of the items.

Hubby & I bought this pretty painting/frame at a garage sale for $2. I didn't want the painting so I'm giving it to my sister in law. It fits her decor better than mine. I wanted the frame for a special project for my kitchen.

This is how it looks after some creamy paint and a touch of mocha glaze and chalk board paint. Pefect for my kitchen. It even has a ledge for the chalk.

We are not finished with our kitchen yet, but it's coming along! Granite will be installed in 10 days...yippee!! I still need to paint the very bottom base of the cabinets (the part that is still golden oak). Trying to decide if I should paint them cream or black to make the base disappear visually. Then hubby will add legs for a furniture look. What do you think...paint it cream or black??

  2. I think white would actually make it disappear, but then you might have kick marks on it... LOVE the frame!

  6. Your kitchen is going to be wonderful, and I love what you did with the old frame -- great makeover!

As far as cream or black ... I had black base cabinets and white upper cabinets in our last house, and I LOVED the look! It is very "butler's pantry" looking -- very chic, I think.

Black does show more "schmutz" than cream and needs more dusting! Just FYI. Whatever you decide, it will look lovely. What color granite? If it's dark granite, go with cream base cabinets, I think.

  8. Darlene, love your chalk board. Hmmmm, I think I should post mine soon too. I made one out of a cupboard door and I love it.

My two bits on the base cabinet color, I would paint it cream. I think the black would scuff and call attention to the floor area, which I would think you'd rather call attention to the cabinets. You could paint the furniture legs black and it would look more like a piece of furniture that way. Just saying. . . that's my two cents for whatever it's worth!!

  10. LOVE what you did with the frame!! Is the chalk board paint on the wall?

I would paint the lower part black... it'll blend in with your appliances I think.

  11. I love chalkboards! I just reposted a project I did a few months ago where I turned an old window into a chalk board. Useful and beautiful, who can beat it?

  12. I've read your comments, and I was about to say "black" just under the base of the white cabinets. However, I looked at ours - they are painted and glazed - country French cream from the ceiling to the floor. We have a black island which is all black, down to the floor. So, guess I would now say that I like the uniform look. Linda

  14. That turned out so cute! So you've been without counters for awhile now? Sink too?? Oh my, going without water in the kitchen for 5 days is quite a challenge I'm finding out. Friday should be the finish day for me & I can't wait. I know you're excited too.

  15. I've seen similar projects done with painting the toekick black and then adding legs the same color as the cabinets. It looks like a great project!

  22. Your chalkboard turned out beautifully. The frame is perfect.

adding my two cents regarding the base of the cabinets: I would do a black kick plate if you are going to be adding legs in the same color as the cabinet. The dark background will make the legs stand out....too much cream and they will disappear, unless you distress them or glaze them. The kitchen looks awesome. You are a lucky gal

  23. I would paint the toe kick cream and the furniture legs black.

I really like that giant frame on the chalkboard. Love it!
